Nevis' Geothermal Resource Considered Among the Best in the World

as Reviewed by TEP's "Big-Data" Analytics and GeothermEx's Flow/Injection Tests

                                              FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

21 March 2018 - Hamilton, Nevis. The official results are in and the Nevis geothermal resource is now being characterized by experts as a high-temperature, commercially productive geothermal resource.  The implications of this development will not only provide resiliency and energy security to  St. Kitts and Nevis, but will also have a significant impact on the rest of the Caribbean.  Using a Big-Data & Predictive Analytics approach prior to the flow test, TEP characterized the Nevis geothermal resource as having commercial-grade quality. This was confirmed by a team from GeothermEx during a recently completed Geothermal Flow & Injection Test.

TEP’s team (led by Bruce Cutright) made estimates last year using a Big-Data & Predictive Analytics approach, calculating that the Nevis site could supply a minimum of 10-12 MW per production well, significantly greater than earlier industry estimates of 3-4 MW per well.  TEP's process - which utilizes approaches from the Oil & Gas industry - has implications for transforming the way the geothermal industry calculates resources for long-term sustainability.  TEP's approach has shown to be more accurate and can save up-front capital that is usually associated with geothermal exploration.

Today's 3rd-party confirmation by Schlumberger's GeothermEx team confirms the previous calculations made by TEP regarding the quality of the Nevis geothermal reservoir. GeothermEx says its findings confirm the requisite temperature and flow necessary for a sustainable supply of geothermal energy on Nevis, and that the reservoir has high-grade commercial quality.  During well testing, the team measured high permeability and commercial temperatures, and sampled the geothermal resource fluid for chemical analyses.  Temperatures were recorded at 492°F (255°C) at a depth of approximately 3,000 feet, and the company anticipates drilling the production wells to 4,000 feet.

When compared to the traditional "hot-spot" geothermal methodology that estimates resources only through test well drilling, TEP's predictive analytics methodology has resulted in greater accuracy in calculations of geothermal potential, transforming the industry.  The application of TEP's data-driven approach indicates that geothermal fluids are more widely available than previously thought, potentially allowing geothermal electricity to be produced at more locations around the world, and with lower risk and greater accuracy.  For St. Kitts and Nevis, TEP's team predicted a high-grade, commercial-quality resource that can supply base-load electricity for Nevis and other islands.
